How does foster carer pay work?

Fostering payments usually include two parts: an allowance to help cover the everyday costs of caring for a child, and a professional fee that recognises the time, responsibility and commitment involved in fostering.

Different fostering agencies don’t always present payments in the same way. Some show the allowance and professional fee separately, while others combine them into one weekly figure. That’s why it is important to understand what sits behind the amount being advertised, rather than comparing agencies on the headline number alone.

At Mosaic Foster Care, foster parents receive a minimum of £600 per week, increasing to £700 or more once the training has been completed.

What should you compare beyond the weekly fostering payment?

Beyond the advertised payment, it is worth looking at the wider financial support an agency provides. Is supportive foster care paid? Which expenses are covered? Are training and therapeutic support included?

At Mosaic, foster parents receive up to three weeks of paid supportive foster care each year, alongside mileage payments, funded training and access to in-house therapeutic support. How does placement stability affect fostering income?

At Mosaic, if a placement of six months or more ends, foster parents may receive a retainer payment of £250 per week for up to four weeks while the next placement is carefully matched.
