Foster Care Payment Rates Shouldn’t Stand In The Way Of You Transforming A Child’s Life

How much foster carers get paid is an important question to answer and a common worry for many people considering fostering. Fears around the additional expenses that come with fostering a child are only natural.  Confusion over money can even be enough to put people off the whole idea. Fostering is a life-changing commitment, a career that you will need to invest in so it’s only right you should be properly compensated for your commitment to the child or young person in your care.

That’s why Mosaic Foster Care offers exceptionally high foster care payments. We understand the challenges prospective foster parents face in making a decision about their future and have created a tried and tested financial support system to leave you free to focus your energy on providing a nurturing home for your foster child, free of worries about getting paid enough for the incredible work you do.

Mosaic Foster Agency Testimonials

Payment for foster parents – what you can expect

At Mosaic Foster Care, we tailor allowances to reflect key factors, including a child’s age, needs, and regional living costs.

Foster parents receive a minimum of £600 per week, increasing to £700+ per week after completing the Training Support and Development Standards (TSD) workbook. This ensures carers are fully prepared while encouraging quick completion and the vast majority complete this by the time their first child is placed with them.

We typically place one child per household, but in rare cases where multiple children are placed, both adults are required to foster full-time. A full fee is paid per child, meaning experienced foster parents caring for three children can earn £2,100+ per week. This gives them peace of mind that the family finances are taken care of when fostering is a full-time commitment.

Tax-free income and salary equivalence:

Thanks to a special UK tax scheme called Qualifying Care Relief, foster parents typically pay no tax on their earnings. A Mosaic foster parent receiving £700 per week (or £36,400 per year) would not be taxed under current allowances – meaning this income is broadly equivalent to a gross salary of around £47,647 in a traditional job. That’s what makes fostering with Mosaic not just emotionally rewarding, but financially sustainable too.

How Much Do Foster Carers Get Paid?
Your Financial Questions Answered

Why does Mosaic pay more than other fostering agencies?

The number one priority governing everything we do is attracting foster parents who are prepared to commit to a child for the long term. We understand and recognise the crucial role financial stability plays here. Money worries can be a big distraction so we try to relieve that burden as much as possible. Foster parents deserve every penny of their payments for the incredible work they do every day and the constant training they undergo.

What if I want to go on holiday. Will I get paid?

For foster parents, a break to recharge your batteries is essential for your wellbeing. Caring for a child who has had a difficult start to life can be incredibly rewarding – but it can come with an emotional price. That’s why we offer three weeks paid holiday a year for our foster parents as part of a generous support package to help you stay strong, resilient, and empowered to deal with the challenging times. You’re never on your own, our team has your back all the way down the line.

Do foster parents
have to pay tax?

In the UK, Qualifying Care Relief allows carers who look after children or adults to receive some payments tax-free. This means most foster parents don’t pay tax on their fostering income. Keeping records of allowances and expenses ensures compliance and helps you maximise available benefits. It’s always wise to speak to an accountant to ensure you’re fully informed. Foster parents may be eligible for tax deductions related to the costs for a child, including food, clothing and medical care.

Additional Support for Foster Parents

Mosaic Foster Care provides extensive financial and practical support to ensure foster families feel secure.

  • Supportive foster care (also known as respite care): Up to three weeks per year to help foster parents recharge. If extra or emergency respite is needed, Mosaic covers the cost or works with local authorities.
  • Unused respite payments: Carers can receive up to seven days’ payment if respite care isn’t required.
  • Therapeutic support: Mosaic’s SMILE framework delivers immediate therapeutic interventions for the whole family, not just the foster child.
  • Practical & emotional support: Dedicated support workers provide hands-on assistance when families need it most.

Bridging the Pay Gap: Why Mosaic Foster Parents Are Paid More

A 2024 report by The Fostering Network highlights a significant disparity in foster carer payments across the UK, with some carers receiving up to £38,000 more per year than others - a difference of £732 per week.

At Mosaic Foster Care, we address this inconsistency by offering competitive financial packages that reflect the dedication and commitment of our foster parents. In contrast, many fostering services provide between £100 - £200 per week, resulting in an annual income of £5,200 - £10,400 for foster families. Such low fees can make it challenging for carers to meet the costs associated with fostering, potentially deterring prospective foster parents. Before you choose the fostering agency for you, be sure to ask about their payment structure and what you can realistically expect to receive.

By offering higher allowances and comprehensive support, Mosaic Foster Care ensures that our foster parents can focus on providing a nurturing environment for the children in their care, free from financial strain.
